Each flag signified one fallen military hero since 9/11/01. I was there at 4AM on the morning of September 11th, to capture the utter quiet and stillness. In the distance I could hear being called out over the loud speaker, each name of each victim, my understanding is they started the reading at midnight. It was surreal, so sad, yet so beautiful. I shared this on my Facebook page, as of today, it's been shared 362 times with 848 likes! No one takes their lives for granted, no one wants to forget. It is a major export, especially to China. The women of these village people are the ones who shell the peanuts - according to an article in CNN, 4 billion hours a year are spent doing so...by hand, by the women of Africa. This people group, and perhaps most village Africans, are very warm and hospitable! There is never a gathering (that might equate party of two or thirty) that tea doesn't break out. It's quite a process of three rounds of carefully brewed strong tea (by one person), with each round getting sweeter than the one before. The ritual is called attaya. Once brewed, the tea is poured into two small glasses and then served by the "brewer" to the guest and as many of those sitting in attendance, especially the elders of the group. Every person takes a sip, (or loud slurp) if really appreciating it, then puts it back on the brewer's tray to go to the next person. Yes, just like their meals being shared in big bowls with up to say five people per bowl, these two glasses of tea are shared among as many as possible. Then it's back to brew round two. The time between rounds seems to last 30-40 minutes. In the mean time, the people are sitting, very closely, (everyone sits and stands VERY tightly (I should blog on that, too...I will) some on top of one another) even when it's 115 degrees, and talk and laugh and talk, telling stories. It's as cute as anything I saw to live in during my travels to Sénegal. Don't get me wrong, I saw some beautiful homes and adorable huts, but look at this - it's so cute!
